Using porcelain tiles for terracing and patios

Open plan living is not just limited to the inside of your home. Matching porcelain tiles for both internal and external use, gives you the opportunity to bring the outside, inside.

Many of our porcelain ranges have an internal version that can be matched to be used externally. These will have a slip rating designed to be used outside and they can often be 2cm thick. This means that the 2cm thick version can be installed in a variety of ways. There is the traditional fully bedded on mortar on top of a suitable sub-base. Or they can be laid on a “pedestal” system as shown below.

This method of installation is proving more and more popular.  Access to void below and the ability to “hide” cables for lighting is very easy. Each tile can simply be lifted and replaced back on the pedestals. Drainage and cables are hidden below your terrace, with easy access should you need to carry out maintenance.

Figure 4 below shows a 1cm thick tile that was installed directly over an existing tiled terrace the client no longer liked. The new tile was slip resistant, frost resistant and stain resistant. Ideal for the terrace. (1cm porcelain tiles, with a R11 slip rating).
